Through our child sponsorship program we assist vulnerable children who are struggling to stay in school due to conditions of poverty and support them to attend school instead of having to work in the rice fields, do chores at home or take care of siblings.

While Let’s Build a School (LBS) is passionate and actively supporting education for all the children at the schools, we focus added attention on educating girls as research indicates that this is one of the most effective ways to improve the overall economy, health and social development in poor communities. We have recently begun to support some of the boys in the program due to severe need and to bring balance to the program. Though empowering girls is the most effective way to improve conditions in the community, we are aware that to support girls, we cannot ignore the issues and challenges that boys are facing in growing into men.

Statistics show that girls who stay in school longer are more likely to marry and have children when they are older, less likely to die from complications in pregnancy or chlidbirth, and their children experience lower levels of mortality and malnutrition. Studies also show that educating girls results in greater political participation and increased empowerment in their homes and community. Women are more likely to pass on their skills, knowledge and earnings to their children, thus exponentially helping future generations to thrive.

With the assistance of our Cambodian teachers and staff, children are selected based on need and risk factors. The children in the program receive a new uniform, backpack, underwear and basic school supplies once a year, extra tutoring on Saturdays, and food packs are provided to families where this need has become dire. We actively follow up on each of the children as they progress and assess any individual needs accordingly.

When we visit the schools in Cambodia, we make a special effort to check in with all the children in the sponsorship program. It’s not just the financial support the children receive (which is critical) but the emotional support. They know that as part of the program, there are people looking out for them who care about their lives, and there is a community supporting them to succeed.
