Khmer Cultural Classes

Traditionally, folk dances are performed in public village spaces to celebrate births, marriages, planting and harvesting, at feasts, and other significant events.

Let’s Build a school is supplying the funding to purchase some traditional dance costumes, as well as other resources (including CD players and speakers) to enable staff to teach Khmer music and dance to the children, and the children can perform at public events.  We’d also like to look into the possibility of getting Khmer dancers and singers to visit the schools and run workshops for the children in the future.

We are hoping to bring Cambodian artists to the school to paint a mural on the wall of our newly renovated library.

During the reign of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge regime, so much of the teaching of Khmer culture was lost. Poverty and lack of access to resources now serve as barriers for communities to revive the traditions that were once celebrated.
