Renovated Library

The original library, in much need of an upgrade

The new and improved library!

Newly Tiled Floor

Most classrooms at the school have concrete floors. They are often in disrepair and are difficult to keep clean. Tiling the floors helps keep the classrooms cleaner and more comfortable on the children’s feet. We are looking for sponsors to add tiles to more of our classrooms.

Thanks to Zoe Thompson for contributing funds to enable us to tile a classroom.

Sponsor Classroom Upgrades

Typical classrooms have nothing but desks and chairs (and sometimes not many) with a frustrating blackboard that’s difficult to write on. That’s it. They lack electricity and are dark and typically very hot. They aren’t very inviting for young kids. This is why we are looking for sponsors who would like to help create more exciting and dynamic classroom environments so kids can learn in colourful and engaging spaces, with appropriate resources to enrich their learning experiences.

We are particularly looking for primary school classes who would like to adopt a “sister” classroom in Cambodia, and work towards raising funds to improve classroom conditions.

All the classes need books, stationery and other supplies to assist with teaching and learning. Even relatively small amounts can really make a difference.

Maintenance and Repairs

The school was built in 1999 by the Shintoshin Rotary Club through World Assistance for Cambodia’s (WAfC) Rural Schools Programs. For the first five years we were supporting the school through WAfC, but since the 2019-20 school year we have been operating independently through the local NGO, Our Future Organisation, with the support of Global Development Group here in Australia. We now use the local name for the school, “Rik Reay” Primary School (translates into “Happy School”).

When we began supporting the school very little maintenance had been provided, the school needs ongoing maintenance. The walls were covered in dust and dirt, the concrete floors are covered in potholes (yes, potholes), and most teachers wer using painted concrete walls as chalkboards. The exterior was in serious need or repainting and the roofs need repairs.

So far, Let’s Build a School has managed to paint and reconcrete the classrooms for six out of the ten rooms, and it has made a huge difference.  We’ve also been able to provide whiteboards for all the classrooms. We have painted the exterior walls, windows and doors.

Three classrooms have now been tiled. We are slowly working on tiling more floors to make the rooms more comfortable.

Whenever possible, labour and supplies are sourced from the village and local businesses, providing employment and income for the local community.
